New year eve tragedy: Bomb kills 6 in Yobe

Six people have reportedly died in Fika, Yobe state after an explosion occurred close to a security checkpoint.
The Yobe State Police Commissioner, Marcus Danladi, told PREMIUM TIMES the explosive device that went off was being conveyed in a car to an unknown location when it suddenly exploded. According to Danladi, the car exploded shortly after it drove past a checkpoint.
An officer of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in Maiduwa Town, who pleaded anonymity told Channels Television that the bomber boarded a commercial Volkswagen Golf Car with the explosive devices from Fika Town heading to Potiskum, the commercial nerve center of the state.

“The people carrying the bomb inside a vehicle were the people who died,” the police commissioner said. “They came from one of the villages where the insurgents are  hiding and the same people carrying the bomb were the same people who died.
“Yobe is calm. There is no problem.”
Just two days ago, an explosion rocked Potiskum, Yobe State, killing one person.

UK records its first Ebola case

The last is yet to be heard about the deadly Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) as the United Kingdom has recorded its first case of the Ebola virus, in a healthcare worker who just returned to the country from Sierra Leone.
Hospital authorities revealed that the carrier of the deadly disease came in on Sunday night, and has been in isolation at Glasgow’s Gartnavel Hospital, while all possible contacts with the case is being investigated.
The National Health Service said that the patient is believed to have had contact with only one other person since arriving in the city, but that all passengers on the flight she took will be traced.
Scotland’s First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon, took part in two emergency meetings on Monday – one of the Scottish Government’s resilience committee, and one of the UK-wide Cobra committee, chaired by the UK Prime Minister, David Cameron.
She told journalists that as a precaution, Health Protection Scotland has traced and contacted, or left messages with, 63 of the 70 other passengers who were on the same flight from London to Glasgow as the patient.
Efforts, she said were being made to reach the remaining seven.
According to UK and Scottish protocol, for anyone diagnosed with Ebola, the patient will be transferred to the high level isolation unit in the Royal Free Hospital, London.
A second health worker who returned from West Africa recently is being tested in Aberdeen for Ebola, it has emerged.

America President is Responsible For his Personal Feeding and not the government.

The President of the United States of America (POTUS) is the head of state and head of government of the United States. The president leads the executive branch of the federal government and is the commander-in-chief of the United States Armed Forces. The person in this position is the leader of the country which has the largest economy and the largest military, with command authority over the largest active nuclear arsenal. The president is frequently described as the most powerful person in the world.

Since 2001, the US president has earned a $400,000 annual salary, along with a $50,000 annual expense account, a $100,000 nontaxable travel account, and $19,000 for entertainment. The most recent raise in salary was approved by Congress and President Bill Clinton in 1999 and went into effect in 2001.

The White House in Washington, D.C., serves as the official place of residence for the president; he is entitled to use its staff and facilities, including medical care, recreation, housekeeping, and security services. The government pays for state dinners and other official functions, BUT the president pays for dry cleaning and food that he, his family, and personal guests consume; the high food bill often amazes new residents.

Na wa for this stomach infrastructure o.

Ekiti State governor, Mr Ayo Fayose, yesterday, commenced the implementation of his stomach infrastructure programme, as he distributed no fewer than 80,000 birds, 100,000 bags of rice and cash gift to the less privileged, widows and the aged in the state.
According to a press statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr Idowu Adelusi, yesterday, the office of the governor was besieged by the people who later went back home with gifts.

Ekiti State Governor, Mr Peter Ayodele Fayose distributing chicken, rice and money to the widow and aged in Ado Ekiti yesterday for the Christmas under the stomach infrastructure programme of his administration
According to the statement, some of the elderly, who could not hide their joy at the rare opportunity of having to celebrate the season with the package, were full of prayers for Fayose and members of his cabinet.
Some of the beneficiaries had stormed the office as early as 10am as the governor, alongside  members of his staff, started distributing the package to the people who kept appearing in their multitudes.
Some of the beneficiaries, including Mr Jewoola from Ado-Ekiti, Mr Ife Akinyeye and Mrs. Afolabi Mary, noted that the gesture reaffirmed the governor as a grassroots man.
They appreciated the governor for putting himself in the shoes of the common man who may find it difficult to prepare sumptuous meal for his family at this period of festivity.
The governor later moved to markets in the state capital with same package for those who could come to the Governor’s Office with a promise that all the 16 local governments had designated centres for the distribution.
In a chat with journalists, Fayose stated that his priority was the welfare of the people of Ekiti who, “against all odds”, returned him to office after eight years in a landslide victory.

The Many Crimes Of Buhari By Prof. Wole Soyinka

The grounds on which General Buhari is being promoted as the alternative choice are not only shaky, but pitifully naive. History matters. Records are not kept simply to assist the weakness of memory, but to operate as guides to the future. Of course, we know that human beings change. What the claims of personality change or transformation impose on us is a rigorous inspection of the evidence, not wishful speculation or behind-the- scenes assurances. Public offence, crimes against a polity, must be answered in the public space, not in caucuses of bargaining. In Buhari, we have been offered no evidence of the sheerest prospect of change. On the contrary, all evident suggests that this is one individual who remains convinced that this is one ex-ruler that the nation cannot call to order Buhari? Need one remind anyone – was one of the generals who treated a Commission of Enquiry, the Oputa Panel, with unconcealed disdain. Like Babangida and Abdusalami, he refused to put in appearance even though complaints that were tabled against him involved a career of gross abuses of power and blatant assault on the fundamental human rights of the Nigerian citizenry. Prominent against these charges was an act that amounted to nothing less than judicial murder, the execution of a citizen under a retroactive decree. Does Decree 20 ring a bell? If not, then, perhaps the names of three youths – Lawal Ojuolape (30), Bernard Ogedengbe (29) and Bartholomew Owoh (26) do. To put it quite plainly, one of those three Ogedengbe – was executed for a crime that did not carry a capital forfeit at the time it was committed. This was an unconscionable crime, carried out in defiance of the pleas and protests of nearly every sector of the Nigerian and international community religious, civil rights, political, trade unions etc.

Buhari and his sidekick and his partner-in-crime, Tunde Idiagbon persisted in this inhuman act for one reason and one reason only: to place Nigerians on notice that they were now under an iron, inflexible rule, under governance by fear. The execution of that youthful innocent for so he was, since the punishment did not exist at the time of commission – was nothing short of premeditated murder, for which the perpetrators should normally stand trial upon their loss of immunity. Are we truly expected to forget this violation of our entitlement to security as provided under existing laws? And even if our sensibilities have become blunted by succeeding seasons of cruelty and brutality, if power itself had so coarsened the sensibilities also of rulers and corrupted their judgment, what should one rightly expect after they have been rescued from the snare of power. At the very least, a revaluation, leading hopefully to remorse, and its expression to a wronged society. At the very least, such a revaluation should engender reticence, silence. In the case of Buhari, it was the opposite. Since leaving office he has declared in the most categorical terms that he had no regrets over this murder and would do so again. Human life is inviolate. The right to life is the uniquely fundamental right on which all other rights are based. The crime that General Buhari committed against the entire nation went further however, inconceivable as it might first appear. That crime is one of the most profound negations of civic being. Not content with hammering down the freedom of expression in general terms, Buhari specifically forbade all public discussion of a return to civilian, democratic rule. Let us constantly applaud our media those battle scarred professionals did not completely knuckle down

Suspected Boko Haram gunmen kidnap 100 over women, children in Nigeria

Suspected Boko Haram gunmen kidnapped more than 100 women and children and killed 35 other people on Sunday during a raid on the remote northeast Nigerian village of Gumsuri, a security source and resident said on Thursday.

Although no one has claimed it yet, the attack bore the hallmarks of Boko Haram, which abducted more than 200 women in April from a secondary school in Chibok, only 24 km (15 miles) from this latest attack.

Its campaign for an Islamic state by Boko Haram, whose name means "Western education is sinful", has become the gravest threat to Africa's biggest economy and top oil producer.

Thousands of people have been killed and many hundreds abducted, raising questions about the ability of security forces to protect civilians, especially around the north Cameroon border where the militants are well established.

Maina Chibok, who did not witness the attack but is from Gumsuri and visited family there shortly afterwards, said the insurgents came in pick-up trucks and sprayed the town with bullets from AK-47s and machine guns.

"They gathered the people, shot dead over 30 people and took away more than 100 women and children in two open-top trucks," Chibok said. Burials of many of the victims had already happened, he added.

News from remote parts of Nigeria that are cut off from mobile communications sometimes takes days to emerge.

A security source confirmed that more than 100 had been abducted and said 35 people had been killed, including the district head.

"They also burned down a government medical center, houses and shops," Chibok said.

The abductions have gained in frequency this year. A man who says he is Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau last month rejected comments by the government it was in talks to free the Chibok girls, saying he had in fact "married them off" to Boko Haram commanders, in a video posted on the Internet.

The military, which does not usually comment on security developments in the northeast, did not immediately respond to a request for comment about Sunday's incident.

A youth vigilante from the area called Aliyu Mamman told Reuters by telephone that there was no security presence to stop the militants, who stayed in the town all night before leaving.

Nigeria sentenced 54 soldiers to death by firing squad for mutiny while fighting against insurgents in the northeast on Wednesday.

Cameroon's army killed 116 Boko Haram militants on Wednesday when they attacked a base in the Far North region of the country, the Defence Ministry said on Thursday.

QUEUE AT FILLING STATIONS IN BENIN CITY OVER OIL WORKERS STRIKE

Following the recent nationwide strike by pengassan and nupeng, long queues at illing station greeted the Benin metropolis.
It was gathered that motorist was in search of petrol yesterday as NNPC mega station did not sell product. Motorist was at stations they can get from to curtail the raining days...
DETAILS SHORTLY

PENGASSAN AND NUPENG GOES ON NATIONWIDE STRIKE.

The unions, Pengassan and Nupeng, said the strike would continue until the government addressed its concerns.
These include the adoption of the delayed Petroleum Industry Bill, aimed at overhauling the sector and maintenance work on oil refineries.
The unions frequently go on strike or threaten to strike.
This time, the two unions were initially demanding the reinstatement of representatives who had been dismissed by oil companies, but now their list of complaints has grown.
They are now protesting that the government has allowed Nigeria's oil refineries to fall into disrepair and that the poor state of the country's roads is hindering the transport of oil.
They are also asking for the price of petrol to be reduced and oil theft to be stopped.
"We've commenced the strike. It will affect oil production, since all operations are on strike," Pengassan chief Babatunde Oke told Reuters.
However, an oil executive said the strike was not expected to affect output, because it would require the co-operation of large numbers of workers at production sites who would be unwilling to go that far.
"It's very difficult to shut them down, and once they do, it would take them a week to get them back up. They never do it. That's the last thing anyone wants," an oil executive told Reuters.
The BBC's reporter said most of the unions' demands seemed "unrealistic, especially with an election looming".
"The refineries are not suddenly going to be fixed because of this strike. Some oil industry watchers suggest the unions are simply trying to force the government to pay them off and get a hefty Christmas present," he added.
A strike in September had little impact on oil production.
Many Nigerians, whether Christian or Muslim, travel home over the Christmas and New Year holidays and so they are stocking up on fuel now, in case of shortages in the next couple of weeks, analysts say.

NIGERIA HIGH SPEED RAIL PROJECT: GLOBALLY TOP 100 WORLD CLASS INFRASTRUCTURE.

Nigeria’s high speed rail project initiated by President Goodluck Jonathan has been rated among the global top 100 world-class infrastructure projects by KPMG.

The rail will connect Lagos, Kano, Kaduna, Warri, Bauchi, Abuja, and Port Harcourt and will cost the country $13 billion, much of which will be financed with a loan from the Export Import Bank of China.

The China Railway Construction Corporation has secured the contract to build the 3,218-kilometre network, which will be digitally operated using fibre-optic cables, radio communication and wireless services.

The project is designed to cover 54 stations and will take 25 years to build.

In the report, The Infrastructure 100: World Markets Report, the KPMG panel of judges said the project “will remove heavy freight from Nigeria’s stressed roads, could save the country millions on road maintenance”.

Other African projects on the list are: Khi Solar One (South Africa), Square Kilometer Array (South Africa), PRASA Rolling Stock (South Africa), Kudu Gas Field and CCGT Project (Namibia),Trans-Saharan Natural Gas Project (Nigeria to Algeria), Mombasa-Kigali Railway (Rwanda), KivuWatt (Rwanda), Jinja Bridge (Uganda), and Jomo Kenyatta International Airport Terminal (Kenya).

In its note, KPMG said the report highlights key trends driving infrastructure investment around the world.

A global panel of industry experts identifies 100 of the world’s most innovative, impactful infrastructure projects showing how governments are coming together with the private sector to overcome funding constraints to finance and build projects that can improve quality of life – both solving immediate needs and planning for future societal demands.

The report looks at infrastructure based on the dynamics of four key markets: Mature International Markets (like Canada, Australia, and UK), Economic Powerhouses (including the US and BRIC countries), Smaller Established Markets (like Chile, Sweden, New Zealand, Korea and South Africa), and Emerging Markets (including a number of economies in Africa).
